THE INDIGENOUS PATTERNS AND HOTEL OKURA published by Iwajiro Noja.
The legendary Hotel Okura, frequented by presidents, celebrities and diplomats and beloved by artists, designers and architects the world over, has inspired us our whole lives as an agency. The modernist post-war hotel, famously featured in James Bond’s You Only Live Twice, ironically, will live twice. After being demolished three years ago (despite painstaking efforts to save it), Hotel Okura will reopen this fall, with promises to embody once again its original grandeur. Is it possible? If nothing else, the patterns, distinctive designs and stunning tapestries live on in this book. Pictured here is the banquet room carpet: a bold dyed diamond pattern (miedasuki) from the Yedo period.
